Canada Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) & Visitor eVisa Guide

Welcome to Canada!

Before you start planning your trip, it’s crucial to understand which entry document you’ll need. Based on your nationality and the purpose of your visit, you may be required to apply for either an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) or a Visitor eVisa.

Please note that our company offers travel guidance and tour packages only. We do not issue or process visas or authorisations. To apply, always use the official Government of Canada website.

1. What is an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA)?

An eTA is a digital travel requirement for citizens of visa-exempt countries flying to Canada. It is electronically linked to your passport and allows you to make multiple short trips for tourism, business, or transit purposes.

Key Details:

  • Eligibility: Travellers from visa-exempt countries (for example, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and most European Union nations).
  • Purpose: Visiting family or friends, leisure travel, business meetings, or transit through a Canadian airport.
  • Validity: Up to five(5) years or until your passport expires (whichever occurs first).
  • Stay duration: Usually up to six(6) months per visit.
  • Processing time: Often approved within minutes, but it’s recommended to apply at least 72 hours before your flight.
  • Application process: Apply online through the official Government of Canada portal.

Travel Tip:

You only need an eTA if you are flying to Canada. If you are entering by land (from the United States) or by sea (such as on a cruise), an eTA is not required.

eTA-Eligible Countries:

Citizens of visa-exempt countries must obtain an eTA before travelling to Canada by air.

2. What is a Canada eVisa (Visitor Visa / Temporary Resident Visa)?

The Canada eVisa, officially known as the Visitor Visa or Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), is required for travellers from countries that need a visa to enter Canada. This includes nations such as India, China, Nigeria, and the Philippines. The visa allows short stays for tourism, family visits, or certain business purposes.

Key Details:

  • Eligibility: Travellers from countries that require a visa to enter Canada.
  • Validity: Usually valid for the same duration as your passport and can be issued for single or multiple entries.
  • Purpose: Tourism, visiting relatives, attending business meetings, or participating in short events.
  • Application process: Apply entirely online through IRCC’s official website.
  • Processing time: Typically takes 2 to 4 weeks, based on your country and application period.
  • Biometrics: Most applicants will need to provide fingerprints and a photograph at an authorised Visa Application Centre.
